Did you hear the one about Ivory and Olive going to rehab? No? We went to eyebrow rehab. Years of waxing and over tweezing left us with less than stellar brows. We were no Pam Anderson but we had to learn to lay off the tweezers. I went so far as to throw my vanity mirror in the garbage. It was the type that had the magnifying mirror on one side. Right in the garbage. It was an enabler. No one, and I mean NO ONE, needs to see their face that closely. If you have one, make today the annual Throw Your Vanity Mirror Away Day.
On our journey of eyebrow sobriety, we found a sponsor. Her name is The Brow Lady (really it is). While I would love to tell you all how to create your perfect brow, I’m still trying to master my own but I can tell you what made the road to recovery much easier: MAC Eye Brow pencil. All along I had been using a brow powder or brow gel alone to fill in the sparse areas. But the key was using this pencil to shape the brow first, then using a powder to fill it in. Have you seen those eyebrow stencils that are supposed to make brow shaping foolproof? Lies. Freehand is the best hand.
MAC Eye Brow pencil is a self-sharpening brow definer that makes shaping easy. The point is tiny and the formula is a creamy wax. It comes in 6 shades for blondes, brunettes and everything in between. I use the shade Stud, which is described as a deep rich blackened brown. It is a perfect color for my dark brows but doesn’t look too dark. Ivory has trouble finding pencils that are light enough for her blonde brows, but she uses Fling, which is described as a light taupe ash blonde.
Honestly, this pencil has given me the equivalent of an eye lift. A few weeks ago, the Medical Assistant at my derm’s office told me that I have perfect eyebrows. I almost hit the floor. I have never been accused of having perfect brows. Not even decent brows. I walked out of the office and ordered another MAC Eye Brow pencil.
Fling is on the left and Stud is on the right. In order to get Fling to show up enough, I had to really apply it in layers. It’s lighter than it appears in this picture.
Want to know the best tip The Brow Lady taught me? After I define them with the pencil, I take a Q-tip and clean up the edges to erase any overdrawn areas. It gives me a nice clean line and keeps them from looking unnaturally drawn on.
